Riding High in Herefordshire

by

This single-day navigational rally is an excellent opportunity to ride an old bike around the byways of the glorious English countryside. Entries have now opened for the 2018 Herefordshire On The Edge event, which takes place on Sunday 24th June. All kinds of classic bike are welcome to take part in this relaxed but rewarding ride – any VMCC-eligible motorcycle will do, vintage, veteran or classic…

Herefordshire On The Edge is open to motorcycles, mopeds, scooters and three-wheelers which were at least 25 years old on January 1st 2018. Organised by the Herefordshire section of the Vintage Motor Cycle Club, the rally starts at one of two locations – either the event’s traditional southern start at The Travellers Rest, Ross-on-Wye, HR9 7QJ, or a new northern start at The Lion Hotel, Leintwardine, SY7 0JZ.

Entrants must plan and then follow a route to visit as many as possible of the 32 designated waypoints spaced at intervals in and around the borders of Herefordshire. There are some cleverly-organised rest stops along the way to ensure that man and machine can refuel and maybe meet other participants. As the photos show, this is the perfect way to explore the hidden hills and wooded valleys of the Black Mountains and around Hay on Wye, and you can plan your own route to suit your machine and how long you want to spend in the saddle…

The organisers would like to attract over a hundred entries this time – last year, 68 people entered on 21 different marques which included some rare and beautiful machines. The smallest bike was just 49cc and the oldest, entered by Steve Sumner, was a 1926 BSA.

Prebook entries close on June 21st 2018 but late entries will be accepted at an additional charge. You need to be a VMCC member to participate (single day membership can be purchased) and riding a VMCC-eligible bike. You’ll find further details on the section’s Facebook page or the dedicated event page, or request an entry form from [email protected]

Happy travels!
